This week celebrates the halfway point between the first day of winter and the first day of spring. February 2, or Groundhog’s Day, has a tradition here in the U.S. dating back to the first celebration in 1887.
Celebrated in Punxsutawney, PA, the holiday came about thanks to local newspaper editor Clymer Freas who collaborated with a number of local businessmen on the idea. As the story goes, if the groundhog sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of cold and snow. If the groundhog doesn’t see his shadow, the legend goes that the remaining weeks of winter will primarily be cloudy and mild. For the record, Punxsutawney Phil is only about 50% accurate. Also for the record, there are at least six other famous groundhogs, all of whom live east of the Mississippi and north of the Ohio River. Staten Island Chuck seems to have the most reliable forecast with 80% accuracy.
Here in California, there’s no groundhog, but KAMB weather does give you reliable forecasts throughout the day. KAMB weather, part of our news headlines each weekday morning and updated throughout the day, covers the Central Valley and Coast. We’re committed to keeping you informed with the news and information you need to plan your day.
