Rhett Walker
Rhett Walker was born and raised in South Carolina where he quickly became the rebellious preacher’s son. After moving while he was in high school, Walker resisted the biblical principles he’d been raised with. He walked down a destructive path and eventually found himself in a tough position at 17 when his girlfriend discovered she was pregnant. This reality served as Walker’s wakeup call. The couple got married and Walker renewed his commitment to God. Once his spiritual life was back on track, opportunities for his music appeared. At the time, Walker was still a member of the Rhett Walker Band. After working together for several years, the band dissolved in 2016 and Walker signed a solo contract.
Throughout his career, Walker has released several albums and attention-grabbing singles. Some of his greatest hits include “When Mercy Found Me,” “All Joy No Stress,” and “Goodness of God.” Over the years, Walker has been nominated for a Grammy Award and three Dove Awards. He continues to release powerful music about God’s grace, and his latest single, Man on the Middle Cross, doesn’t disappoint.
Man on the Middle Cross
Man on the Middle Cross is Rhett Walker’s most recent celebration of the Lord’s grace in our lives. The song comes from the story of Jesus’ time on the cross with the two men hanging beside Him. As Walker reflects on the story, he describes how similar he is to those other men: undeserving of forgiveness and unable to save themselves. Just like Walker, each of us can relate to their feelings of sorrow and brokenness. We’ve all made poor choices and we’ve all lived with the shame of regret at one time or another. However, just like these men, we too can have hope and deliverance through Christ. Although Walker relates to the men on Jesus’ right and left, the focus of the song is Jesus. We may be similar to the criminals beside Him, but we are called to fix our eyes on Jesus.
Walker uses his song to remind us that there was a Man on the Middle Cross because it’s important. Oftentimes, the things we face control and paralyze us. We believe that we’re beyond the reach of grace or that our lives can never be redeemed. That isn’t the story of the Gospel, though. The promise and hope of Christ is the reality of God’s grace upon each of us. No one, not even the men on the other crosses, is too far gone for God to save. Our sins may poison and even cripple us, but Jesus always save us. Of course, we can’t do it on our own, and now we never have to try to. God gave His Son for us because He loves us and because He knows we need Him. No matter what you’re facing, remember the Man on the Middle Cross.

Lyrics
I heard the preacher talking About three wooden crosses Upon a hill for everyone to see Two sinners on the outside Couldn't save themselves if they tried All I could think is man that sounds like me I've been the one on the left full of guilt and regret Long-gone on the wrong side of living I've been the one on the right always looking for a fight Thinking I could never be forgiven I'm standing here today overwhelmed by grace 'Cause I know who paid my calls Thank God for the man on the middle cross He didn't have to do it But for me He went through it A love like that I'll never understand Lord knows I don't deserve it And I know I couldn't earn it Let mercy rain down on this desperate man I've been the one on the left full of guilt and regret Long-gone on the wrong side of living I've been the one on the right always looking for a fight Thinking I could never be forgiven I'm standing here today overwhelmed by grace 'Cause I know who paid my calls Thank God for the man on the middle cross The cross is where He went Oh but that ain't where He stayed He brought me back to life When He rose up outta that grave Sometimes I'll stand before Him And I'll see Jesus face to face I'll worship and adore Him For a life forever changed I've been the one on the left full of guilt and regret Long-gone on the wrong side of living I've been the one on the right always looking for a fight Thinking I could never be forgiven I'm standing here today overwhelmed by grace 'Cause I know who paid my calls Thank God for the man on the middle cross Thank God for the man on the middle cross
Conclusion
When the weight of sin and shame threatens to wear you down, cling to the hope of Jesus. All of us make mistakes and carry regret close to our hearts. If we aren’t careful, we can so closely identify ourselves with the men on Jesus’ right and left that we forget all about Him. Instead of living in such misery, we must remember our Lord and Savior. As Rhett Walker reminds us, there was a Man on the Middle Cross, and He came for all of us.
