How blessed we are to share in the Lord’s goodness together through praise and worship. As we approach Thanksgiving and other end-of-year festivities, let’s not forget the joy we have in our Lord. Through celebration and sorrow, our God is faithful. In his new song, Watch What God Can Do, Patrick Mayberry speaks to the power of small acts of faith. Every step counts and everything is useful to our Lord. No matter our circumstances, we can turn to God and rest in His hands as we wait on His response.
Patrick Mayberry
During his childhood, Patrick Mayberry discovered his love of playing guitar. His family’s attendance to a Church of Christ, however, discouraged him from blending this skill with his love of Jesus. It wasn’t until high school that Mayberry became friends with other teenagers and leaders in his YoungLife chapter. Unlike his experiences at church, Mayberry was encouraged to pursue his love of guitar alongside his faith. Despite his discovery, it wasn’t until his college years that Mayberry understood how God wanted him to use his gift of music. After attending Passion ’06—Mayberry’s first encounter with large corporate worship—he knew exactly what God was calling him to do.
Some time after pursuing the call to ministry, Mayberry was invited to attend a Centricity artist retreat in Washington. In that environment, Mayberry felt refreshed in his spirit and like he’d finally found the people he was meant to share his passions with. He befriended several of the artists and later collaborated with many of them. Today, Mayberry continues to pursue his love for the Lord through songwriting and singing. He deeply desires to help people know the heart of God through his music and writes towards that end, for himself and for his listeners. It’s with this desire that Mayberry released Watch What God Can Do.
Watch What God Can Do
Sometimes the idea of stepping out in faith can scare us away from actually doing it. We think our step needs to be huge and deeply demanding of us. And maybe, sometimes, it does. But a lot of the time, God is calling us to take any step toward Him. In Watch What God Can Do, Patrick Mayberry describes the importance and impact of the small things. All throughout the Bible, God draws our attention to the small moments that defined someone’s faith. Jesus described such things as a seed of faith (Matthew 17:20). At times, it was saying no to a king, singing songs of praise, and lifting a staff. In others, it was entering the fire, facing the lions, and bearing the cross.
Perhaps it isn’t the idea of “small things” that is holding you back, but the thought that you must first be perfect or good before God can use you. This is just as untrue as believing only big steps are effective in the Kingdom of God. Nothing is wasted in the hands of the Father. Whether you’re searching for an answer or waiting for a miracle, keep crying out to God. He can use you in the middle of your pain. And He can pull you out of it as you let Him carry you through it. All you have to do is say “Yes, Lord” and step back so you can Watch What God Can Do. It may not look the way you thought it would but, in His goodness, God will provide. And then He will use you and your story to encourage others. He will use you to tell them of times when you were uncertain and how He got you through it. He will use you to tell them, Watch What God Can Do.
