Who ‘Dun’ It?

“Who sinned: this man or his parents, causing him to be born blind?” This either/or question of the disciples to Jesus recorded in John’s gospel was met with a response that didn’t fit their expectations: “You’re asking the wrong question. You’re looking for someone to blame. There is no such cause-effect here. Look instead for what God can do.” (John 9: 3-4, MSG).
Trying to make sense of it all
Often, it’s hard to make sense of life and the circumstances that surround us. We tend to look for why things happen to us, why life didn’t go the way we hoped, and why bad things happen to good people. There are no easy answers. In fact, sometimes there seem to be no answers on this side of heaven. So, why do we pray? Why should we trust a God who people say is good all the time and all the time He’s good?
There Are No Simplistic Answers
Jesus taught his disciples that God brings blessing to both the just and the unjust (Matthew 5:45-47) and He prepared them for the reality that His followers will experience trouble (John 16:33). After citing several examples of people who trusted God even though His promises seemingly eluded them, the writer of Hebrews reminds us that “God had something better planned for them and us, together (Hebrews 11:39-40).
Seeking His Greater Purpose
Today, when you may be tempted to doubt, or you may consider leaving your faith behind, perhaps you wonder if following Christ is really worth it, ask God to remain faithful, protect you, to reveal Himself more clearly to you. And for your part, ask God to help you to see with His eyes and believe with His heart that a greater purpose is unfolding.
