A New Name
Although her name might be unfamiliar, KAMB artist Brooke Ligertwood has been making award-winning music for decades under her maiden name, Brooke Fraser, and as a part of Hillsong Worship. However, 2022 is the first year that she has released music under her married name.
Brooke is from New Zealand, and she started learning piano at age seven, writing songs at twelve, and playing the guitar at fifteen. She began a solo music career in 2002 that quickly took off in New Zealand and beyond. From 2006-2010, she sang and wrote music for Hillsong Worship, then returned in 2016, co-writing worship favorites like “What a Beautiful Name” and “Who You Say I Am.”
In addition to winning numerous awards, including a Grammy for “What a Beautiful Name,” she is a mom to two young daughters and passionate about charity, worshipping God, and being a part of the local and global church.
Her 2022 album SEVEN is about “the marriage of theology and art,” and its central idea is that Jesus is at the center of the church. In an article for American Songwriter, Brooke said, “Ideas are one of the most powerful things in the world. Theology is ideas about God—in other words, some of the most powerful ideas in the world. When this type of potency can be delivered through rhyme and melody, it’s practically combustible. It becomes something that God Himself might just ride in on.” On this project, she collaborated with other songwriters, including her husband Scott, as well as a choir, emphasizing the song’s theme of church unity in worship.
Her latest single from SEVEN, “Honey in the Rock,” co-written by Brandon Lake, is inspired by Psalm 89. The song is about “how the Lord feeds us with honey from the rock. In the wilderness we can still experience sweetness because we trust and know Jesus.” The song came together quickly, and she says she is “buzzing” to share it! A Journey begins
First, let’s take a look at KAMB Artist Abby Robertson’s journey, which began soon after her birth. When she was just a baby, Abby’s mom heard the Lord say “This little hand will hold a microphone in front of thousands.” What a joy it must be for her mom to see the Lord’s words play out over a lifetime of her faith unfolding and developing. She was diagnosed with a reading disorder early in school and her parents moved her to an alternative learning school. Lessons were taught through music.
“Music is memory muscle,” Abby explains, “so I just remembered how to sing things and then I’d remember how to actually speak and read things….That’s how it all started. It was me having a struggle, me loving music and [working through] that struggle with music.”
Early music career
All before the age of 21, Abby opened for bands such as the Beach Boys and Switchfoot. She has traveled the globe performing at music festivals. KAMB Artist Abby Robertson has even released pop songs and dabbled in country music. Abby will tell you that despite an impressive beginning to her music career, the moments she is most proud of are when she has been able to express openness and honesty in her music. She loves the authenticity she is able to convey through her talent.
The struggle is real
In 2018, KAMB Artist Abby Robertson was struggling to believe the truth God speaks into our lives and hearts. She was falling into the common trap of believing the lies of this world which left her questioning her gifts and abilities. She was questioning why God made her the way He designed her to be.
Years after school, Abby is still relying on the way she learned early in school. She is looking at the struggles of this life and learning to navigate them through music. The best part is that she can help other believers like you and me as we face the same struggles of this world. Her music can help us all to remember to place our identity in Christ and fall into the loving arms of our heavenly Father. You can hear her latest song, “Without Your Love” on KAMB.
